Have you ever heard this phrase? When we see that someone is sad, we probably understand that it is a temporary emotion and that soon the person will return to a state of joy or neutrality. But what happens when this does not happen? What happens when the days and weeks go by and you don’t see that person you love full of joy again? Depression is more than feeling sad. Depression is a mental health disorder in which the person can suffer a very deep sadness that does not go away even if they wanted to.
Differentiating one thing from the other can help us as a society to detect the signs of depression. If you see that someone you love expresses feeling deeply sad, is no longer enjoying his free time as before, is not eating or resting well, or expresses thoughts that it would be better not to live anymore, this person could be depressed. In these cases, it is best to tell them that seeking psychological help would be beneficial. There are psychological treatments that have proven to be effective in reducing depressive symptoms. If your loved one has thoughts of harming themselves, please call 911 or take them to the nearest emergency room.
